What is Charas?

Charas is one of the oldest forms of cannabis concentrate in the world, a hand-rubbed hash that originates from the Himalayan regions of India, Nepal, and Pakistan. Unlike Moroccan or Afghan hash, which are made from dried plant material, Charas is uniquely produced by rubbing live cannabis flowers between the palms of the hands, collecting the fresh, sticky resin directly from the living plant. This resin is then carefully scraped from the hands and rolled into balls or sticks. The process is extremely labor-intensive, as it takes many hours of hand-rubbing to produce even a small amount of Charas. The quality depends on the skill of the maker, the genetics of the cannabis plant, and the altitude and climate where it is grown. The best Charas comes from high-altitude regions where cannabis plants produce exceptionally resinous flowers as a natural defense against harsh UV exposure and cold temperatures.
