What is Dry Sift?

Dry Sift is one of the oldest and most traditional forms of cannabis hash, made by mechanically separating trichomes from dried cannabis plant material through fine mesh screens. Also known as dry sieve hash or kief hash, this solventless concentrate has been produced for centuries across hash-making regions from Morocco to Afghanistan and is now widely made in the Netherlands using modern cannabis genetics. Dry Sift is a staple on Dutch coffeeshop menus, valued for its purity, natural flavor, and versatile potency that ranges from affordable everyday hash to premium full-melt quality.

How is it made?

The dry sift process involves placing dried and cured cannabis flowers or trim over a series of fine mesh screens, then gently agitating the material to cause the trichome heads, the tiny resin glands containing cannabinoids and terpenes, to detach and fall through the screens. Multiple screen sizes can be used in sequence, with each pass producing a different grade of hash. The first pass yields the purest, most trichome-rich material, while subsequent passes collect progressively more plant matter. The collected kief can be left as a loose, sandy powder or lightly pressed into blocks. The finest grades, where nearly pure trichome heads are collected, are known as "Full Melt" dry sift because they melt completely when heated with virtually no residue.

Flavor and Aroma

Because dry sift is produced without solvents, water, or significant heat, it preserves the natural terpene profile of the cannabis strain used with exceptional fidelity. The flavor and aroma vary depending on the source material, but typical characteristics include earthy, herbal, and sweet notes with spicy and pine undertones. High-quality dry sift delivers a clean, aromatic smoke that closely mirrors the terpene signature of the original flower, making it one of the most flavorful and authentic hash experiences available.

Effects

With THC levels typically ranging from 25% to 50% depending on the quality and number of sift passes, dry sift offers a wide range of potency. Lower-grade sift provides a mellow, balanced high similar to traditional Moroccan hash, while premium full-melt grades deliver a powerful, concentrated experience with strong euphoria, deep relaxation, and creative stimulation. The effects are generally smooth and well-rounded thanks to the preservation of the full spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes through the solventless process.

How to use it

Dry Sift is one of the most versatile forms of hash. Loose kief can be sprinkled on top of flower in a joint, bowl, or bong for added potency. Pressed dry sift can be crumbled into joints, smoked in a pipe, or vaped at low temperatures for maximum terpene expression. The finest full-melt grades can even be dabbed. As one of the most fundamental and widely available hash types on Dutch coffeeshop menus, dry sift represents the purest connection between the cannabis plant and the art of hash making.
